CAL 2020

Score 2020
96/100

The 2020 VO Cal is even sharper than the 2019 I tasted next to it, and it's low in alcohol (11.9%) and has very low pH (2.95) with notable acidity (7.4) grams. The élevage was slightly longer—14 months in a combination of different sizes of barrels and 800-liter tinaja. This vineyard is always harvested quite early, and that was the case this year; but the style of the vintage is for moderate alcohol and higher acidity. Yields were also a little higher, and the wine is superb, austere and vibrant, quite harmonious, with a piquant palate with a sparkling texture and a long and salty finish. It has to be the finest Cal. Unfortunately, this will be the last vintage of Cal, as the vineyard was sold. This should be quite long lived. 4,300 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021.

Quite 2020

Score 2020
93+/100

The 2020 Quite, an old-vine Mencía cuvée from vineyards in Valtuille de Abajo and Villadecanes, is lower in alcohol than the 2019 I tasted next to it (13.1%) and has a notably lower pH (3.25), which means more freshness. The differences are vintage related, as the vinification and élevage were similar—natural fermentation in stainless steel and malolactic and nine months aging in used 225-liter oak barriques and oak vats. 2020 was a more reductive year for reds, and this is a little more austere but with subdued floral character and notes of fresh meat and blood with an iron-like sensation (it comes from very red soils rich in iron!). This is more fluid and fresh than the 2019, with a vibrant finish that makes you salivate, more sophisticated and precise. 15,400 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2021.

Cobrana 2020 (nog niet gescoord)

Score 2019
95/100

The 2019 VO Cobrana has a similar profile to the 2017, from the field blend of Mencía, Alicante Bouschet, Estaladiña, Palomino, Godello and Valenciana in a very old vineyard at some 750 meters in altitude on decomposed blue slate soils in the village that names the wine. This is the fourth vintage of this Vino de Villa de Congosto. The full clusters fermented in open troncoconic 5,000-liter oak vats, co-fermenting all the varieties—red and white—in a long maceration, trying not to degrade the skins. It matured in 225-liter oak barrels and 800-liter tinajas for 15 months. The 2019 feels very young; it's a vintage that is not as immediate as 2018. This wine has more depth and more clout than the Kinki, especially as the 2019 vintage has more structure than 2020. It's serious and nicely textured, not as fragrant as the 2018, somewhere between Burgundy and the Rhône. There is a little more wine in barrel here, and that might have increased the serious profile. It feels like the higher altitude and the slate soils keep the freshness that is difficult to keep on the valley floor. 3,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2021.

Roc 2019

Score 2019
95/100

2019 was a slightly warmer and drier year than 2018, but the 2019 ROC, like many other top reds from that vintage, doesn't show any heat or excess ripeness. It's a little higher in alcohol (13.7%), but it keeps the balance and poise with more acidity and a little lower pH. It matured in used 228-liter French oak barrels for 16 months. It's a year of high extract and tannin; the reds are more powerful, and they are going to repay time in bottle. This wine has austerity, and more importantly, it has balance. It has depth and minerality, in a different style than 2018, perhaps a more serious version of 2015, which had more fruit; perhaps this is something between 2016 and 2015 and more balanced than the 2017. It should be long lived. 4,725 bottles were filled in April 2021.
