Definition Bodegas Roda

Roda is one of the star estates in the Rioja; it embodies the renaissance of this famous wine region.

History Bodegas Roda

Coming from Barcelona, the family Rotllan-Daurella had great ambitions and chose the most prestigious DO in Spain to fulfill them.

After 5 years of thorough prospecting, they settled in Haro, the capital of the Rioja Alta, and more precisely, in the railway station district, where the great classics of the Rioja (Viña Tondonia, La Rioja Alta, CVNE, Bodegas Bilbaínas…) are located.

Their cellar has a view on the Sierra Cantabria and overlooks the Ebro River.

The company was founded in 1987 but its first wine was only released in 1992.

Why? Because at each level of the production process, nothing short of perfection is expected.

From the very beginning, famous oenologists like Agustín Santolaya, Carlos Diez, Isidro Palacios and Esperanza Tomás formed a “dream team” to look after the winemaking.

The flagship wine of the bodega is the Roda I – the production of which varies according to the quality of the vintage, for the aim is to capture the essence of Tempranillo and ensure a great ageing potential.

The Roda blend is also a top wine, but it is made each year with Tempranillo blended with Grenache and Graciano. Both cuvées come from vines aged 30 years or more.

There is also the “Sela”, made from vines aged between 15 and 30 years.

Last but not least, there is the Cirsión – “something else”, as if it were coming from another planet. This wine is produced from selected grapes in which polymerisation begins inside the berries.

Roda is also very active in Research & Development; for instance, it has the largest experimental vineyard for Tempranillo (more than 500 clones).

Varieties

Tempranillo is the main grape, of course. Vines are 55 years old on average – grapes from younger vines are sold to other producers and are not used for the estate’s production until they “come of age”.

Then they are used for the Sela, then the Roda.

More than 70 hectares of vines are in production – 65 hectares of Tempranillo, the rest being divided between Graciano and Grenache.

All vines are trained in goblet; grapes are well ventilated and benefit from a good exposition of the sun. Average yield is 4,000 kg per hectare.

Tempranillo and Graciano come from the Rioja Alta, whereas the Grenache comes from Tudelilla, in the Rioja Baja, which is the best suited area to this variety.

No insecticide is used on the vines, the estate respects the ecosystem integrity.

Terroir

What is remarkable at Bodegas Roda is not a unique terroir, but the diversity of terroirs the wines come from. Rioja has some 20 different identified terroirs; Roda has 17 of them. The common element between them is a good drainage and a good exposition.

Most of the vines grow on sand and silt. These soils can be divided in two categories : terraces with shallow petro-calcareous soils that barely go as deep as the tips of the roots. On this rather flat land, vines are generally oriented north-south.

The other type of terroir is on soft slopes with poor soils but with a much deeper superficial layer.

Both types of soils have a high pH (between 8 and 8,5).

The Riojan climate is mild with continental and Mediterranean influences. Vines are not irrigated. Rainfall is not huge but well spread over the year.

Winemaking

The ripeness control of the grapes is not done by analysis, but by tasting them: the oenologists taste the berries and the pits and wait for them to show a perfect phenolic maturity.

In the case of the Cirsión, only the grapes where polymerisation has already started are used.

Harvesting is done by hand and all grapes go through the sorting table.

Maceration and fermentation take place in large oak vats. Each vineyard is vinified separately. Only indigenous yeasts are used.

Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels (half of which are new). After one year of ageing, comes the time to decide which barrel goes into which cuvée (Roda or Roda I). Then the final blends are made.

Sela is aged for 12 months; Roda and Roda I between 14 and 18 months, according to the vintage. Cirsión is a special case and is aged 8 months only.
