Definition José Pariente

This award-winning estate has been inspiring many winemakers in Rueda

History José Pariente

In 2000, two friends, Marivi Pariente et Viki Benavides, founded a wine estate in the Rueda region, under the name of "Dos Victorias".

In the beginning, they made theirs wines in another bodega, for want of means. Progressively, the project ripened and they could build their own cellar in San Roman de Hornija, not in the the Rueda area, but in Toro. This way, they could make their red wine under the DO Toro.

But not their Rueda white, because the Spanish law says that one cannot make two DO under the same roof.

So the two friends decided to part. Marivi built her own bodega in Rueda, under the name of José Pariente (Marivi's father) while Viki kept the San Roman cellar which she baptized Elias Mora.

Marivi's Verdejo has won innumerable awards in wine competitions, and her estate is now a source of inspiration for many.

Varieties

65 ha of vineyard - 60 ha Verdejo and 5 ha Sauvignon blanc.

The main grape of the estate is thus Verdejo, a variety with small berries and a rough skin ) a welcome protection in the extreme climate of the region. Its pulp is very dense, with a high aromatic potential.

It gives a lot of structure to the wines, and a perfect combination between vegetal and exotic aromas.

Since 2007, José Pariente has also been making a 100% sauvignon blanc. This French variety was introduced in Rueda in the 70's and its characteristic are quite similar to those of Verdejo.

Terroir

Mainly alluvial, the soils are stony, rich in calcium and magnesium, but poor in organic compounds.

On the hills, some calcareous layers are also to be found.

These rocky soils protect the roots agains the temperature changes. They reflect the warmth of the Sun in summer; and ensure a good oxygenation and drainage.

Winemaking

José Pariente uses minima doses of sulphur, which is made possible by the climate condition.

The yields are very low, the pruning very strict.

Dry ice is used during the (manual) harvest to protect the grapes from oxygenation.
