Definition Acústic Celler

No doubt that Acústic is THE success story of the DO Montsant. Although his first vintage was only 2004, he is already considered as one of the denomination's top producers.

His trademark is pure, fruity wines with a marked Mediterranean character. To make them, he only uses grapes from old vines of Grenache and Carignan. Rightly so!

History Acústic Celler

Albert Jané is the youngest of the Jané brothers, of the Bodega Jané Ventura – one of the top estates in Penedès. Since 2005, Gerard has been running the family winery on his own, for Albert wanted to create his own estate. This dream came true in Montsant.

It all started in 2004, with a few blocks of vines around Capçanes en Marça. Only old vines, Grenache and Samso (a local version of Carignan).

Albert made his first own wine in a garage, at Els Guiamets. Its name: Acústic. Unplugged. For Albert wants to produce wines which are true to the grapes and the vineyard, acoustic wines obtained naturally, without any amplifying.

In his own words: “99% of the quality of a wine comes from the vine”.

In the winery, Albert only checks that everything is OK, but never ‘manipulates’ the wine. Meanwhile, the small project has grown; Albert moved from the tiny garage in

Els Guiamets, to set up his cellar in an old textile workshop in Marça - the next village.

And little Acùstic has now two “brothers”, Braó and Auditori. The three of them are getting better with each vintage. Since 2008, Acústic is also made in white, in very small quantities. Albert Jané is now recognised as one of the most gifted winemakers in Montsant and his top wines are amongst Spain’s very best. Acústic Celler means authentic wines of character, works of art made in accordance with tradition.

Varieties

Acústic Celler works only with local indigenous grapes and only with old vines.

Albert controls 25 hectares directly, and buys grapes from some other local winegrowers with old vines.

His reds are mainly made out of Grenache (5 hectares) and Samsó, aka Carignan (15 hectares); but in his oldest blocks, Lladoner (Grenache poilu) can also be found.

Vines are between 25 and years old. All goblet or bush vines.

His whites are made with Grenache blanc, Macabeu, Grenache gris and Pansal (a local version of Xarello). In total, 5 hectares of the estate are planted with white grapes.

Terroir

Albert’s small blocks of wines are spread over the whole Montsant area. Some are located at an altitude of 300 m, some at 800 m. Terroirs are very diverse, from stones to “sauló” (sedimentary sand), via clay, slate and granite. All these soils, which originate from the erosion of the valleys, are poor in nutriments and rather rocky.

Montsant’s climate is rather peculiar. Although not far from the Mediterranean, it is surrounded by mountains, which gives it a quite extreme Mediterranean climate, very dry, with cold winters and hot summers.

This is a hard climate for vines, hence lower yields than in others regions nearby.

The estate’s philosophy is to respect the vineyard and its environment and find the right balance. The vines are tended organically.

Winemaking

Albert does not put too much emphasis on winemaking. According to him, 99% of the job is done in the vineyard. He puts a lot of emphasis on the old vines. He prefers to buy old blocks of vine than invest and to build a state-of-the-art cellar.

As all his vines are goblet vines, they are hand-harvested. Winemaking is kept very simple. As regards aging, Albert never uses new barrels, but French oak barrels which have already been used twice. He does not want the barrel to influence the wine too much.
