Definition Bodegas La Horra (Roda)

A new top wine estate in Ribera del Duero. This small scale project was built around some old vines by Roda team, of Riojan fame.

The quality requirements are as high as in Rioja.

History Bodegas La Horra (Roda)

For quite a long time, the members of the Roda team had been toying with the idea of a new wine project.

Could they replicate in Ribera del Duero their Riojan success, based on years of research and experimentation on the Tempranillo grape? That was the question.

Even if Ribera uses this grape as well as Rioja (be it called Tempranillo or Tinto Fino), here it shows a very different personality.

Anyway, after prospecting in different areas, they chose Ribera del Duero. Agustín Santolaya and his technical team took their time to find the best vines and the best conditions.

They started very modestly - like they had done in La Rioja.

They finally bought vines in the La Horra area and named their estate after this village. Like in La Rioja, they chose old vines. And like at Roda, they decided to produce only two wines: «Corimbo» and «Corimbo I».

This project is still very young, but according to us, it has a great potential. Quality-wise, all the Roda guidelines are applied, and they are as demanding as can be.

The name of Corimbo comes from a type of flower where the different buds form a sort of crown, like in a thistle.

Varieties

La Horra uses only one variety: Tinto Fino, the local version of Tempranillo. It is quite different from the Rioja type, because it is much more resistant to extreme weather conditions.

Terroir

The village of La Horra is located on the highlands of the Burgos province, some 5 km north of the Douro River. This is also where the Pingus vines can be found.

The vine blocks are quite diverse, but the common factor is the poverty of the soils.

Most of them are sandy, with clayish areas; they are often calcareous superficially.

The climate is severe and continental, presenting a high diurnal temperature variation, as well as a high temperature range between summers and winters.

The Douro is too far to be able to moderate this harshness.

The vines are planted between 600 and 850 m above sea level.

Winemaking

Like at Roda, only old vines are used – 20 year-old vines on average for Corimbo, 30 year-old vines for the Corimbo I.

Grapes are fermented in big oak vats; then the wines are transferred into 225 litre barrels for the malolactic fermentation. Corimbo ages there from 12 to14 months; Corimbo I ages from 16 to 20 months.
