Definition Vall Llach

Singer and wine producer.

History Vall Llach

Vall Llach was founded in 1990 by Lluis Llach and Enric Costa. Lluis Llach is the most famous Catalan singer; Enric Costa is a lawyer and owns several plots of vines. Both of them wanted to get back to their roots and decided to revive old blocks of vines spread out between Porrera and Torroja, in Priorat; mainly small patches on steep slopes, called «trossos». The grapes are Grenache or Carignan, nothing else.

Restoring these trossos was an endless task, but in 1998, Val Llach was able to produce its first wine, before presenting it to the public at the end of 2000.

Meanwhile, Lluis Llach had an old house renovated, La Final, in the heart of Porrera. This is where the micro-vinifications of the different trossos take place. 200 m further down the road, Lluis also had another house, Cal Valdrich, restored. It now houses the ageing cellar.

The top blend, named «Vall Llach», comes exclusively from the estate’s trossos; it is some kind of quintessencial Carignan. But the estate also produces the «Idus», made out of other trossos grapes, bought from other growers.

With its younger vines, Vall Llach also makes a third red wine, the Embruix (enchantment).

The white cuvée, Aigua de Llum, is a blend of Viognier and Grenache blanc planted on one of the highest plots of vines in Porrera.

All vines are farmed biodynamically, in an environmentally friendly way, respecting the flora and the fauna.

Varieties

The trossos, or small plots of vines on slopes, are the estate’s greatest asset.

In their top cuvées, Carignan has the lion’s share, in the Idus as well as in the Vall Llach.

The estate spreads over 49 hectares, with 16 hectares of Carignan, 10 hectares of Grenache, 8 hectares of Syrah, 8 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, 6 hectares of Merlot, 0.5 hectare of Viognier, 0.5 hectare of Grenache blanc and 0.5 hectare of Macabeu.

Vall Llach also buys grapes from trossos belonging to other growers, but always Carignan and Grenache.

Terroir

The estate comprises 16 vines, which present a great diversity of expositions: north, south, east and west. The upper “trossos” are on steep slopes (up to 60%). The altitude varies from 350 to 500 m.

The soil is composed of llicorella, the typical slate of Priorat. As the vines are old, and the soils poor in organic nutrients, the yields are very low (180 to 300 g of grape per plant).

The average yield of the new vines, in comparison, is around 500 g per plant.

The climate is Mediterranean, but the influence of the sea, which is quite near, and the altitude explain the relatively cool temperatures. Winters are cold, especially at night.

Winemaking

In this kind of vines, the harvesting can only be done by hand. According to the vine and its exposure, they take place between mid-September and the beginning of November. The grapes of each vine or “trosso” are vinified separately in very small tanks. Each year, there are some 80 different vinifications in the cellar.

Cool macerations, alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place for part in stainless steel tanks and for part in barrels. Only indigenous yeasts are used. The ageing takes place in French oak barrels of 225, 300 and 500 litres.
