The 2017 Columella begins with a dusty essence and dark-fruited core, that is dusty yet still has a softness to the nose. The palate is expressive with an austere peppery edge that is tightly wound with dusty tannins and a sandy powdering of blackberry, dark cherry and black plum skin. Ethereally structured, the wine has power and precision that is highly complex and will age for decades to come. The finish is shy, yet still having the depth and breadth of a fine wine, that lingers with a firm dusty minerality and tannic grip. Wow! What focus!

A stellar day in the Swartland led me to connect with Eben Sadie for Sadie Family wines. Eben had just returned home from a winemaker's surf trip to Angola. Eben may be one of the most thoughtful and most considerate of the Swartland winemakers. He seems quietly humble with a real world view and speaks of mentorship and continuing education for the betterment of South African wine culture. I immediately got the sense that Eben has a genuine respect and love for the rare old vines that he seeks out to work with to create structured and finessed wines. Eben's wines continue to be some of the most terroir-driven and minerally expressive wines for me. The wine shines through with a level of magnificence that is simply stunning. Sadie Family wines are tough to find as most of these wines are on allocation. Sadie Family wines are worth seeking out.

Description

In South Africa like in Spain, Terroir is a relatively new concept. The oenologist of the Spanish estates we work with played a pioneering role in understanding its value. The same for Eben Sadie and its family in South Africa.
Columella is the flagship of this small company. Its production is very limited, but the quality is very high.

Vinification

Hand-picked in small baskets; natural yeast, fermentation in open 3,000 litre concrete tanks, for 3 weeks. 3 weeks maceration, without anything added. Malolactic fermentation in oak barrels (5% new oak). 12 months of ageing in French oak barrels, then one more year in big foudres, on the lees. Then, after 2 years, the wine is bottled, without any filtration or clarification.

Storage potential

20 years.

Serving

Decant 2 hours before serving in a large glass.
