A Bruxa 2023
“Awesome beyond belief”

Indeed, we were talking about her only last Friday: Verónica Ortega, our winemaker with the most impressive CV in Spain; from Romanée-Conti to Raúl Pérez, with many other stages in between.

Personally, I think she makes the best white wines in Bierzo.
But that is not all:

In 2023, she surpassed herself, in red wines too!
Read what Gutiérrez writes for R. Parker:
“the 2023’s are the finest collection of wines she has produced so far. This goes straight to the top of the hierarchy – not only within her range but in the whole Bierzo”.

That is no small statement!

We have received a new red wine from her, limited as always: only 90 bottles: Cobrana, A Bruxa 2023.

This comes from part of the vineyard that already produces Cobrana, a very steep slope with a slate and limestone terroir. It was vinified separately for the first time in 2023. Mainly Mencía, but also with an important share of white grape varieties such as Doña Blanca and Godello. This was released slightly later than the “regular” Cobrana.

Fantastic, fine and elegant stuff!
The first thing I did was put 6 bottles aside for myself.

This is Bierzo at its very best!

Description

A Bruxa is Verónica Ortega’s newest red vino de paraje, vinified separately for the first time in 2023. The wine comes from a very old 0.46-hectare plot in Cobrana, located at 750 metres altitude. It is a field blend based mainly on Mencía, complemented by Alicante, Palomino, Doña Blanca and Godello. The vineyard lies on highly weathered slate, above a sandier subsoil of clay and limestone. This gives the wine a very different profile from the more classic Mencías of Bierzo: finer, more floral and with plenty of tension.
