This is a complex, vertical and very mineral wine.
A pure Godello. The best white in the Ribeira Sacra.

Vinification
A very long fermentation (more than one year), with indigenous yeasts.
Aged in 700 litre chestnut wood barrels, with bâtonnage.

Storage potential
5 to 10 years.

To serve
Serve at cellar temperature, in a large Burgundy-style glass.

Trial analysis
Beautiful pale golden colour.
As the perfume indicates, this is a serious wine indeed: at first, some woody notes, but these are rapidly overwhelmed by the explosion of white fruit, and elegant mineral and floral notes.
Th wood is much less perceptible on the palate; what dominates is the impression of freshness, ripeness and volume. The structure of this pure Godello is nearly faultless. Mineral notes come back at the finish. A gastronomy wine with a lot of potential.

The top of the range white is pure Godello. They aim for a long-lived white with their 2014 Escalada, sourced from steep sloped vineyards; it finished fermenting in barrel, a very slow fermentation in this vintage, which lasted for one year. The two whites could not be more different in character. Here you notice the seriousness, the concentration, the power, the elegance and the subtle minerality. The power here is not provided by concentration, but by the saline minerality, which is more a tactile sensation than an aroma or flavor; this wine is straight, the word symmetric comes to my head, pungent and sharp. In another word, terrific! 4,000 bottles produced.

Wine estate

The work of a life time, that of Fernando Gonzalez, who started to recuperate old vines, almost abandoned, some 25 years ago. After rebuilding the walls that protect them from erosion, he started to make wine again with them.
This heroic, extreme cultivation takes place on slopes up to 85%.
Today, Fernando owns 16 hectares on the slopes, more than 40 blocks of vines, mainly planted with red varieties. Raúl Pérez transmitted to him his wine philosophy: wine is made in the vine, with a deep respect for the territory and its identity.
