This 2022 is the latest addition from Quinta da Muradella.
José Luis actually did not want to release it yet, but after some persistence we managed to secure a small allocation of Bastardo 2022. We therefore couldn’t present it at the tasting, as he felt it was still too young (I kid you not! 😊).
That is why we are putting it in the spotlight today. We have tasted it in the meantime and fully approved it. Super refined!

As mentioned earlier,
José Luis Mateo is today considered the best winemaker in Galicia. And that is certainly no exaggeration!
Alongside his outstanding whites, I am especially a big fan of his red wines.
A nice comparison by Gutiérrez:
“It's a little like what Forrest Gump said: it's like opening a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get! The whites are always superb, and I found the reds quite extraordinary too.“
Or as he also said:
“Many producers consider José Luis Mateo to be the finest grape grower in Galicia. He's relentless in his search for excellence and is often unhappy with the results even when you think the wines are amazing.
In fact, his wines are amazing, without a doubt the finest of Monterrei, and they transcend the appellation and find themselves among the finest wines from Galicia and from Spain.“

I know, red Jura wines are not for everyone: light in colour, low in alcohol and, depending on the producer, often very pure with no make-up.
That is exactly what we find in this Bastardo, which is the Galician version of Trousseau: a light colour, 12% alcohol (in a Spanish wine!) and a lot of purity and minerality.
José Luis works fully organically and only with natural yeasts during fermentation.
