Mother and daughter together craft one of the most original wines of Catalonia!
And I can say that with full conviction. I visited them at the start of last summer. We shared a meal together in the ático of their beautiful house in Gandesa. Not only did we do a
vertical tasting of their
fantastic Garnatxa blanca “
El Quintà”, but we did the same with the
fabulous Coma d’en Pou.
The first vintage we ever imported of this wine was 1996. So we’ve built up a fair bit of experience with this wine and its ageing potential. We tasted 1999 (elegant, perfect to drink now), 2003 (a hot year, but now, after 20 years, surprisingly refined), and 2010 (at least another 10 years ahead, 15% alcohol, and yet so fresh and elegant!).
Impressive stuff: 100% Grenache from a Mediterranean terroir, but so refined, so pure, and so elegant.

Mari-Carme and her daughter Pili are both pioneers of Terra Alta, Catalonia’s southernmost appellation, beyond the Ebro River.
Mari-Carme because she put the region and its grape varieties back on the wine map, Pili because she converted the entire vineyard to biodynamics and practices a form of viticulture she calls “agro-ecology”.
With deep respect for her ancestors’ traditions and her terroir.

This Coma d’en Pou 2022 is a fantastic powerhouse
of a wine with years of life ahead.
You’ll hardly find a better price/quality ratio for a wine
with this kind of ageing potential.
For us, 2022 is one of the best vintages ever, and we’re thrilled
to once again present this Catalan field blend of
various old-vine Grenache (Garnatxa negra, Garnatxa peluda, Garnatxa roja) to wine lovers.
This is also confirmed by La Guía de Vins de Catalunya, which awarded it the title of best red wine of Catalonia!
It’s a region that is still relatively unknown, and at Bàrbara Forés, production remains tiny (just over 50,000 bottles in total); yet even R. Parker has tasted the Coma d’en Pou 2022:
R. Parker: 92/100
The red 2022 Coma d'en Pou was produced with the grapes from a vineyard planted with different types of Garnacha on limestone soils. It's perfumed and floral with a spicy twist and mealy hints of cereal, notes of pollen and red berries. It fermented in open-top barrels and stainless steel with a small portion of full clusters and matured in 500- and 600-liter oak barrels and some glass demijohns for 13 months. It has ripeness and some creaminess and is round and lush, with 14.5% alcohol, reflecting the year, some dusty tannins and a touch of rusticity. 4,511 bottles and 180 magnums produced. It was bottled in February 2024.
Bàrbara Forés, one of the pioneers in Terra Alta, has all the vineyards and wines certified organic.
