The best price/quality in the Remírez de Ganuza range:
Last Friday, we highlighted the final bottles of this estate’s top cuvée: the
Gran Reserva 2015.
Today, we turn our attention to its “younger brother”:
Fincas de Ganuza Reserva.
But make no mistake: this is certainly not a second wine or a lesser one. The main difference lies in the vineyards. These vines are at least 25 years old, whereas those for the Gran Reserva are 60 years or older.
And in the vinification and ageing: Fincas does not undergo malolactic fermentation in barrel, and it matures for 24 months in French oak barrels.
The Gran Reserva takes much longer and matures exclusively in new oak barrels.
Both wines age beautifully and are perfect examples of what modern Rioja has to offer.

For me, there are two big advantages to Fincas de Ganuza:
Firstly, its price – and
secondly, its finesse, reminiscent of a great Pinot Noir.
We were at the estate again last September and had the chance to taste several older vintages of Fincas de Ganuza. Truly stunning!
This is the most approachable and ready-to-drink wine in the Remírez portfolio – yet it also ages beautifully without any problem.
In short: highly recommended!
