Red Volcanic Wine from Tenerife:
Listán Negro 2023

Tenerife is best known as a holiday paradise, but very few wine lovers know that the island also produces fantastic wines. Not on the tourist-heavy southern coast, but mostly in the west and north.

Near the small towns of Garachico (the former capital of Tenerife and definitely worth a visit!) and La Guancha, you’ll find the vineyards of Viñátigo.

They were the pioneers of the new wave of winemakers on the island. Especially thanks to Juan-Jesús Méndez, Viñátigo’s founder and owner, a whole new generation of producers emerged who finally saw the island’s true potential.

Juan-Jesús literally wrote the book on Tenerife’s native grape varieties and replanted them in his own vineyards. While he’s best known for his mineral white wines, his reds are also well worth discovering! Listán Negro 2023 is a particularly refined, mineral wine with beautiful volcanic notes.

The vines, planted en franc de pied, are spread out between 300 and 1000 metres altitude.

With just a short 3-month élevage in oak barrels, the wine retains all its elegance without any wood influence, allowing its full volcanic character to shine through.

Do you enjoy subtle wines with character and minerality?
Then this Listán Negro is definitely worth trying.
And to top it off: unbeatable value for money!

Description

Jesús Méndez wants to give autochthonous Canarian cépages that are almost extinct a face back with his Viñátigo project. All his wines are vinified in very limited volumes. 'Pie franco' on volcanic substrates. Blend of ungrafted native white varieties from the Canary Islands. The selected varieties and proportions vary from year to year depending on the harvest. The Listan Negro grapes come from ungrafted vines more than 100 years old. Grown between 500 and 900 metres above sea level, in north-western Tenerife. Young volcanic soils, with good drainage and very rich in minerals.
