In barely a year, Màquina & Tabla had become a familiar name with us. A young couple, Susana and Oriol, who go to great lengths in Castilla y León to make wines as naturally as possible.
How could anyone not feel sympathy for them…?!
Their wines were not only honest and delicious, but also very attractively priced. Unfortunately, this also cost them two vintages. Their way of working and their low prices caused financial problems at the winery.
In the meantime, all debts have been paid and they have made a fresh start.
And we are very pleased with this new direction. Not only because they no longer take the risk of refermentation in the bottle, a problem that occurred twice in the past and cost both them and us a great deal of credibility, but also because they now work in an even cleaner and more honest way.
And yes, they add a small amount of sulphites at bottling, precisely to keep the wines cleaner and more stable.
And no, we do not mind at all. Quite the opposite…
Their philosophy has remained the same: letting the terroir speak through old vines.
So you will not find the typical yeasty and gueuze-like aromas that characterise some natural wines, but only aromas of wine and terroir, minerality and freshness.
After two years, they have finally managed to convince us with a fresh new take on Máquina & Tabla.
And we couldn’t be happier!
I admit that the wines have gone up slightly in price compared with two years ago, but the project is now financially viable and the wines are still honest and delicious!
Don’t hesitate: both the white and the red are honest, seriously delicious wines!
The white: a delicious Verdejo with its own twist and plenty of character.
The red: fantastic Tempranillo and Garnacha, full of juiciness and brightness.
