Hacienda Solano is probably our least well-known estate in the outstanding Ribera del Duero appellation. The winery is located in the small, almost mythical village of La Aguilera, at an altitude of 830 metres.
The Peña Lobera, or “Wolf’s Rock”, lies in the forests surrounding the village, some 70 metres higher. The terroir consists of poor sandy soils with a high limestone content. This is the site of an old vineyard with vines that are over 100 years old.
As is often the case in old vineyards, there is a mix of both white and red grape varieties. This explains why the wine contains around 5% Albillo each year, the rare white grape variety of the region.
So if you are looking to taste something different from this top appellation, let your Alións and Valbuenas rest in your cellar for a while, because this wine is already drinking beautifully today.
It naturally still has great ageing potential, but its finesse and freshness make it highly enjoyable even at a young stage.
A truly remarkable and rare quality for a Ribera del Duero.
Here is what R. Parker has to say :
97/100
"Putting my nose in the 2021 Finca Peña Lobera made it evident that it was again going to be my favorite of the range and even more so in this cooler and more balanced year. The wine is nothing short of extraordinary. It's fine-boned, elegant and refined, with a perfumed nose and palate with energy and light, very fine tannins and amazing balance. I think this could very well be the finest wine ever produced at the property. Congratulations! 1,661 bottles were filled in June 2023.
Hacienda Solano is the joint venture between the Cubillo family from La Aguilera in Ribera del Duero and Mustiguillo from Valencia. These are classical Ribera del Duero wines with character and balance. They produce just short of 70,000 bottles.
