In advance:
-
How does it work?
You pay for your primeurs in January and they are already delivered in April!
This means you only pay a few months in advance, not two years as with a traditional primeur.
-
Excellent news as well:
for the first time in the history of the estate, there is no price increase.
A decision we can only applaud.
2016, just like 2015, is an absolutely outstanding vintage for Unico.
And that is no coincidence!
Looking back at Valbuena 2016, released five years ago, it already received top reviews.
“very much in line with what has happened in the best vintages since 2010. 2016 is going to be a wine that the public is going to like; it has an extroverted personality and is perfumed and generous, juicy and tasty and nicely textured, with fine-grained tannins and very focused and clean flavors.”
2016 was a year of very good freshness in Ribera del Duero, a year they like even better than 2018.
”
And Valbuena is the little brother of big brother Unico. So that promises a lot!
James Suckling has already given Unico 2016 the highest score ever awarded: 98/100.
Unico 2016: 98/100
“A beautifully poised Vega that is already approachable. Everything is in harmony, showing
an almost ethereal quality
in contrast to the denser 2015 vintage. There’s a hint of minerality paired with the blackberries and dark cherries. The tannins are firm yet softened. Medium to full body and
a finish that lingers for a minute.
”
If your child or grandchild was born in 2016, you are in luck!! 😉
The same story applies to the Valbuena 2021.
What more can be said about this outstanding vintage?
An absolute top year, both in Ribera del Duero and in Rioja!
According to Suckling, one of the best ever.
It therefore receives the same score as Unico 2016.
A true tour de force. Little brothers grow up!! 😉
Valbuena 2021: 98/100
"
One of the finest Valbuenas available
, showcasing great depth, structure and detail while remaining polished. It exhibits notes of blackberries, cocoa powder, graphite, and high-quality sandalwood, with hints of lard and violets. The standout feature this year is the quantity and quality of the tannins—huge, yet incredibly refined and polished. There are plenty of fine grits that aren’t fully integrated but should harmonize in two to three years.
Exceptionally long finish. Will hold effortlessly for the next 20 years.
"
And then: for me personally always the best of the entire range,
with the greatest future, complexity and that little extra touch of magic:
the Reserva Especial.
This is a blend of the 2011, 2012 and 2014 vintages.
This 2026 release is truly magical!
With an outstanding 99/100 from J. Suckling!
Reserva Especial VTA 2026: 99/100
This is a blend of the concentrated and structured 2011, 2012 and 2014 vintages.
The wine displays impeccable tannins, complexity and length, feeling remarkably complete due to its aging.
Expect notes of blackberries, accompanied by a subtle balsamic nuance and high-quality cedar. The wine remains plush yet restrained and layered, showcasing abundant tannins in a melted, dissolved state. Release in 2026. It already drinks beautifully now but will benefit from additional years of aging in the bottle.

Since last week, all wines have been scored by James Suckling, as indicated above.
Parker scores will follow shortly. But don’t wait and place your order in time!

Pay close attention to the large formats.
Allocations for standard bottles are more limited this year,
making the magnums and double magnums even more rare.
If the investment aspect of your cellar is important to you, these formats deserve your full attention.
For the first time ever, magnums can also be purchased at primeur price.
A double primeur indeed! 😊

Regarding the investment aspect, it is worth noting that last year Vega Sicilia ranked number 1 on the Liv-ex index,
the London-based “wine exchange index”.
An impressive achievement for a Spanish wine estate,
leaving all Bordeaux, Burgundy and Italian wines behind!

Vega Sicilia has been fully certified as an organic wine estate for two years now
(even though the vineyards have been farmed organically in practice for over ten years).
No small feat for a winery of this size.
In 2024, they also built a state-of-the-art composting facility, fully in line with best practices.
