Product info
The Chupadero is a volcan near la Geria. This 200 year-old vineyard is truly spectacular, in a crater some 30 meters wide. Makes one think of a lunar landscape.
Vinification
Maceration and alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in sherry-vats, which has a clear influence on the wine.
Then 6 more months of ageing.
Storage potential
Drink preferably from 2023 and before 2029.
At its best between 2025 and 2027.
To serve
Decant before serving at 14°C in a large glass.
Trial analysis
Light colour. Austere, mineral, almost ethereal ion the nose. Maybe the most volcanic of all the Puro Rofe cuvées.
More powerful than expected on the palate, given its 12° of alcohol.
Nice crisp acidity, subtle and complex; a salty finish. Spectacular!
Reviews
R. Parker (94/100)

There is a new white from a spectacular paraje inside a volcano, from 100% Listán Blanco planted over 200 years ago in a huge (30-meter diameter) vineyard on black volcanic ash in a place that looks like the moon. The 2020 Chupadero carries the name of the volcano and the zone of La Geria. This was the first vintage for this wine when they had to ferment it and mature it in a sherry cask; therefore, it carries an orange label. But the wine here has so much energy and clout that the effect of the barrel is a lot milder than in the Chibusque and is in the background, but it's there. The wine is medium-bodied, very dry and austere, with 12.03% alcohol and a spherical palate, with great balance and nuance. It matured in the sherry butt for eight months. Only 582 bottles were filled in June 2020.

Wine estate

Lanzarote seems to be a wine-lover's paradise: its old autochtone varietals grow on lava soils under Atlantic influences...
But until recently, frustratingly, all we tasted there was only banal.
That was also the impression of Rayco Fernandez, a distributor on the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria. So with the help of some friends of the same mind, he set out to make real terroir wines on Lanzarote.
And the fact that we, after 25 years of tasting wines from all regions of Spain, have still been impressed by their production shows how good these extreme terroir wines can be.
