Which Roman emperor was Spanish?
Of course you knew that!
Indeed:
Emperor Trajan.
Although his ancestors also had Umbrian roots, Trajan was born in the province of Baetica (today part of Andalucía), whose capital at the time was Corduba, now Córdoba. He ruled the Roman Empire from 98 to 117 AD.
We all know he greatly expanded the Roman Empire and was praised both as a general and a ruler — but what really matters for this newsletter: we know with absolute certainty that he was already drinking Spanish wine back then!
Whether there’s a causal link to his excellent leadership will always remain a mystery 😉…

Why this classical introduction?
The name of the winery “Augustus” is no coincidence. The Via Augusta runs right through their vineyards, only a few kilometres from the famous “Arc de Berà”.
Naturally, their top red wine had to be named after the most iconic Roman emperor of Spanish origin:
Trajan.
Trajan is made from their oldest and best vines, mainly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a touch of Cabernet Franc and Garnatxa.
Fully organic. It’s the ultimate Mediterranean Bordeaux blend. And in fact, this is a wine of Grand Bordeaux quality – but at a much smaller price.
This is a 2016 vintage that is drinking beautifully now. Bold, with smooth tannins and lovely freshness and balance. Like any great Bordeaux, this Trajan is the perfect pairing with grilled red meats.

What makes it even more special is that
it was made especially for us.
When we visited in the summer of 2020, just after lockdown, we were utterly charmed by this 2016, which had only been made in tiny quantities.
There were fewer than 1000 bottles to bottle. So we decided to take them all.
Hence the name “edición limitada”. This Trajan is not available anywhere else in the world, only at La Buena Vida!
That’s also why we can offer it in a
5+1 promo.
