And we couldn’t be happier!
Sadie’s South African wines hold a special place in our range.
In no time at all, his wines became South Africa’s cult wines.
Columella is South Africa’s iconic cult red and certainly deserves a place in your cellar!
It is the same story as with the white wines: the difficult trading conditions in many other countries meant that this year we were offered a record allocation for Belgium, which we gladly accepted 😊!
But following the en primeur sale, large quantities are no longer available.
Maximum 6 bottles per wine per customer!
If you’ve never tasted his red wines, trust me:
they’re a must for your cellar!
Every collector should have some!
Tim Atkin reviewed them all in his South Africa Report. And Columella once again received the highest possible score: 100/100.
Columella is Eben’s signature wine.
For Eben, Columella 2024 is a red with tremendous ageing potential. A superb wine to enjoy over the next 20 years!
Here is what he says about it:
“This 2024 Columella shows the customary Mediterranean spicy herbal aromas, with peppery notes and violet accents. It has a lot of fresh red fruit, mulberry, and graphite aromas, along with some dried figs. On the palate the wine displays chalky firm tannins. We believe it is some of the best and most complex tannins we have managed to capture in Columella. The tannins and mouthfeel have been our absolute focus for the past eight years, and we have spent much time studying the various post-fermentation extraction points and pressing dates”
Here is what Tim Atkin MW wrote in his recently published South Africa Report, covering the finest wines from the latest vintages. Columella was the only red wine to score 100/100, once again confirming its status as a true cult wine.
Tim Atkin: 100/100
Sadie Family Columella 2024 – Swartland
The best Columella since 2019 in my opinion – a wine that also achieved a “perfect” 100-point score – this is now a nine-variety Mediterranean blend from a dozen different Swartland sites, dominated by the Paardeberg. Syrah takes the lead, accounting for 40% of the cuvée, but this is a collective effort that includes Grenache, Cinsault and even a little Pinotage among other grapes. Violet, thyme and fynbos aromas lead you into a palate of wonderful density and energy, with sculpted tannins, subtle minerality and flavours of tangerine, blackberry and red cherry framed by 5% new oak. One of the Greatest-ever South African wines
