Vinification
Hand-picked in small baskets; natural yeast, fermentation in open 3,000 litre concrete tanks, for 3 weeks. 3 weeks maceration, without anything added. Malolactic fermentation in oak barrels (5% new oak). 12 months of ageing in French oak barrels, then one more year in big foudres, on the lees. Then, after 2 years, the wine is bottled, without any filtration or clarification.

Trial analysis
The 2024 Columella displays the customary Mediterranean spicy herbal aromas for which the wine is known, accompanied by peppery notes and floral violet accents. Aromas of fresh red fruit, mulberry, graphite and dried figs add further complexity.
On the palate, the wine shows firm, chalky tannins. According to the estate, this vintage captures some of the most refined and complex tannins ever achieved in Columella. Over the past eight years, the focus has been strongly directed towards tannin quality and mouthfeel, with extensive work on post-fermentation extraction and the ideal timing of pressing.
