The new Pingus?
That’s what I wrote in 2022 when the 2019
Cuvée “S” was released. By now, it’s clear that’s not the case. The style of Calogía – and especially that of its flagship “Cuvée S” – is not the same as Pingus. (If that’s what you’re after, the

And still, you really shouldn’t miss this…
Even more striking: we were there in early May. That morning, we tasted the new releases from Vega Sicilia at the estate;
As always, absolutely top class. An hour later we were at Calogía, tasting the new 2021 vintage of Cuvée “S” together with José Manuel.
We were blown away — this wine was entirely in the same style as what we had tasted just an hour earlier at Vega Sicilia.
This is truly exceptional! 2021 is magnificent!
Well, when someone like José Manuel Pérez Ovejas, who was the oenologist at Viña Pedrosa for more than 25 years and was named Oenologist of the Year in 2018, launches his own wine, it certainly doesn’t go unnoticed!
We’ve never seen this much media buzz and excitement in Spain around the release of a new wine!
And with good reason — expectations were sky-high:
The wine is made from old Tempranillo vines at the foot of the Cuesta Manvirgo in Roa, one of Ribera del Duero’s finest terroirs (Calogía is the name of the plot). Just a stone’s throw from Pingus and Corimbo in La Horra.
These vines grow at 800 m altitude, with an average yield of just under 4000 kg/ha — half the regional average.
Aged for
24 months in the finest French oak barrels from first-class coopers.
2019 was already an outstanding launch vintage.
But with 2021, he takes it to the next level. Here we find
power and elegance in a velvet glove, with a clear Atlantic signature.
But above all: an oenologist with 30 years of experience in the region, who already crafted some of the greatest wines at the family estate. José Manuel masterfully combines technique with intuition and has perfect control over Tempranillo ripeness in this region.
