Planella 2023
The lesser-known wine from my favourite
estate Joan d’Anguera
The Anguera brothers have delivered quite a few surprises over the past years: from their complete shift since 2020, to leaving the Montsant appellation, and the release of a top white wine: Finca l’Argatà blanc…
One constant, however: their wines keep improving every year. These are becoming the great classics of their kind. Their production is now only a quarter of what it was before 2010.
Remarkable!

They are always among the last to harvest in their Montsant region.
Their wines are light and almost ethereal in colour, the complete opposite of what you would expect from late-harvested grapes.
This also explains the very limited yields.
This is the Catalan Rayas!
Their top wine Vinya de la Glòria, Finca l’Argatà as well as their entry-level wine Altaroses are made from 100% Grenache.
There is, however, one major exception: Planella. This is a beautiful blend of Carinyena and Garnatxa, giving it a bit more structure than Altaroses and Finca l’Argatà.
This is the 2023 vintage, the second produced outside the appellation.
Excellent value for money!
And the wine is simply delicious.
2023 was a truly outstanding vintage for them, albeit with lower volumes due to the heat.
One of the strengths of their approach is that the wine is already very enjoyable when young, while also offering great ageing potential.
In this price range, together with Altaroses, it is one of our favourites!
