Product info
José Luis Mateo has a passion for the small, often inaccessible plots of vines on the hills around Monterrei, in Galicia. At the turn of the 2000's, he collaborated with Raul Pérez to make the A Trabe cuvée. Now he uses the same vines to make the Viticultura de Montaña range, sometimes blended with other grapes.
Vinification
White and red grapes are harvested together, this is a real complantation wine. The vines are 60 to 80 years old.
The grapes are foot-trodden in open tanks, the follows a long maceration (3 to 4 months) and fermentation (6 months), with a as little intervention as possible. Half of the grapes are not de-stemmed. only natural yeasts are used.
Then the wine stays one more year in stainless steel and some 2 more years in bottles before being released on the market.
Storage potential
Till 2030.
To serve
In a large Burgundy-type glass.
Reviews
R. Parker (94/100)

The eponymous red 2013 Muradella Viticultura de Montaña, comes from Muradella mountain viticulture, as he selects grapes (even some whites) from the higher altitude vineyards and ferments them together: Bastardo, Mencía, Mouratón, Garnacha Tintorera, Dona Blanca and Gran Negro. The wine fermented in an open oak vat, with a high percentage of full clusters (more than 60%) and indigenous yeasts, with a two-month maceration. It matured in different sized oak barrels for its élevage and then kept in stainless steel for one year. It's spicy and earthy, and there is a creamy touch, too. The palate is medium bodied, with finesse and balance but not lacking power. This has inner strength and concentration, too, but looks light. The tannins are very fine grained. There is contained ripeness and nicely integrated wood. 2,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2016.

Wine estate

A modest man, José Luis Mateo is yet considered by many as the only real good winemaker in the Monterrei appellation, and even the best of all Galicia.
He doesn't care about the accolades and scores he gets in the international wine press, working according to what he sees in his vines.
