A Crianza como dios manda!
On Friday, I told you how our story with Viña Pedrosa began.
Those were the days!
And what a history…
They were one of the 5 founding members of the Ribera del Duero appellation in 1982. Vega Sicilia was another. Two great classics, side by side.
The wines of
Vega Sicilia remain the region’s great benchmarks, of course. Yet in recent years, you can taste
a more modern touch, without any departure from their history or style.
As for Viña Pedrosa, they still make their wines the traditional way: low yields from organically farmed vineyards, perfectionism all over the place, and ageing in American and French oak barriques. Today, this is without doubt the most traditional of Ribera del Duero’s great estates.
This is exactly our style of Ribera del Duero: refined, elegant, a little rustic, and ageing beautifully. Above all, there’s that wonderful gamey nose and the sanguine character of the Gran Reserva! With game season approaching, this is simply the perfect match.
But Viña Pedrosa makes a whole range of wines, following the classic path from Crianza to Gran Reserva.
On Friday, I recommended the fantastic Gran Reserva 2018, a cool vintage with excellent ageing potential.
Today, I’m talking about their classic Crianza, offering fantastic value for money. Their Pedrosa Crianza is the wine that best represents the house style: balanced and elegant.
I’ll admit it: this 2022 comes from a riper vintage, so it’s best enjoyed before 2032. Still a good 10 years without any trouble 😊!
But a wine like this, at under 30 euros, always puts a smile on my face!
This is true traditional Ribera del Duero, at an attractive price.
