The mostly unoaked Mencía 2021 Castro Candaz feels a bit reductive and with the wild character that you sometimes get from the reds from Mencía. It's juicy and fruit driven with some earthy tannins. It was produced mostly with Quiroga grapes and a little from Chantada. 15,000 bottles produced.
Castro Candaz is the small, common project of Raul Perez, Spain top oenologist, and Rodri Mendez (Forjas del Salnés, in Rias Baixas). They want to produce lighter wines (not more than 13° of alcohol) by harvesting sooner. Cuvées for those who like elegant Burgundy-style wines.
Mencia (100%)
75 cl.
2025
It is often said that Mencia has the fruitiness of a Pinot Noir and the freshness of a Shiraz. This young (joven) wine was made with the same care as the Raúl Pérez's other cuvées but comes from younger vines.
2023
This entry level wine in Raul Perez's range is a tribute to the Camino de Compostela (Ultreia is the salute given to the pilgrims on the way); it is also a very pure expression of the Mencia grape.
Mencia
This latest addition to the Castro Candaz range was first produced in 2018. It is the only Mencía made from grapes sourced from several vineyards, both in the northern Chantada area and in the Bibei area of Ribeira Sacra. Pure Mencía fruit!
The "basic" wine from Algueira. Its amin characteristics are drinkability, juiciness, but also typicity and minerality. This type of wine is juicier than most of El Bierzo's Mencias.
Mencia (91%), Palomino (4%), Alicante Bouschet (1%), Gran Negro (1%), Malvasia (1%), Negreda (1%), Valenciana (1%)
Entry-level wine from this house. Honest, tasty and super-fruity. Pétalos = flower petals. Mainly from vineyards in and around Corullón. Mainly Mencía, but also quite a few unknown white and red grape varieties from the region due to the use of vieilles vignes. In 2021, it was named the best red wine in the world for value for money by Wine Spectator.
