Palomino

Cobrana comes from a different village than Valtuille. It consists of several parcels around the village of Cobrana at 700 metres altitude. Here the soils are not sandy but composed of blue slate with clay. Verónica mainly works with field blends, very traditional for the region, with about 25% white grapes co-fermented with the reds. This co-fermentation results in a “Blouge” profile, a contraction of blanc and rouge, creating a wine that sits between white and red. This gives the wines from Cobrana a more Burgundian character, whereas those from Valtuille show a more Rhône-like profile.

Barely 1.6 hectares of old Mencía vines, complemented by a small amount of Palomino and Tintorera. Las Lamas is usually the more structured of the crus, but in fine vintages it retains that typical Atlantic touch, with plenty of finesse. Very limited availability!

Entry-level wine from this house. Honest, tasty and super-fruity. Pétalos = flower petals. Mainly from vineyards in and around Corullón. Mainly Mencía, but also quite a few unknown white and red grape varieties from the region due to the use of vieilles vignes. In 2021, it was named the best red wine in the world for value for money by Wine Spectator.

“ROC” was the first wine Verónica made in this region in 2010. It is a tribute to her brother Roberto, who passed away at a young age. It comes from two parcels (El Couso and La Rata) located in Valtuille de Abajo, on poor sandy soils with quartz debris. The vines are 80 years old. This blend made from the best terroirs of Valtuille can bear the "vino de Pueblo" mention. This was has not a big extract, but it is typical of the Mencía grape.

Skerpioen (Scorpion) is a wine from a very unique location halfway between Dwarskersbos and Elands Bay on the West Coast. One of the most amazing aspects of this location is the fact that the soils are chalky (limestone). In addition to that it is one of the coolest parts of the Swartland region, located a mere 2km from the Atlantic Ocean, but it is also a very dry area with an average rainfall of around 300mm per year. This location is home to some of the most intense south-easterly winds and the old vines look almost abused after having been battered by winds and blowing sand for years and years.

The concept behind this wine is establishing a single vineyard site with futuristic grape varieties that will brace and stand in the future climate change. At the same time, the vineyard, with a myriad of dynamics and grape varieties, will enable them to produce a complex wine by virtue of its dynamics. It is a concept of “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts,”

Since 1838, the winery has been located at the mouth of the Guadalete River, in the Bay of Cádiz. The dry Levante winds and the humid Atlantic winds from the west regulate ambient humidity, maintaining the optimal conditions for the wines. The stability and quality of Gutiérrez-Colosía wines are ensured through ageing in a criaderas and soleras system, following the region’s finest tradition. The first warehouse was built in 1838 and remains almost unchanged today. It passed through several owners until the early 20th century, when D. José Gutiérrez Dosal, great-grandfather of the current generation of the Gutiérrez-Colosía family, purchased it. Gutiérrez-Colosía is also the only winery that directly faces the Guadalete River, providing the perfect humidity for the biological ageing of fine wines under the “flor” layer (microorganisms that develop on the surface of the wine).

The name means The Footpath in Dutch, and comes from the name of Dirk Brand’s wheat and rooibos tea farm, where the rustic block of old vines is tucked away. This is surely the most isolated old vineyard in the country, presumably originally planted to supply the farmer and his neighbours. Its 1.4 hectares host varieties established in the Cape since the early days of European settlement, with most of the planting done between 1887 – 1928, and all of the vines grow on their own roots . The vineyard’s survival without irrigation is also extraordinary in this hot valley in the north of the huge Swartland region, near the village of Aurora and Elands Bay on the coast. Its precise location has allowed it to survive, with an underground river flowing beneath it from the mountains
