History Adega a Barouta
Javier Alen of the former Viña Mein estate in Leiro (San Clodio) decided to sell his estate to Pago de Carraovejas in 2019 and retire. Or wait... no it didn't. That pension thing ended up on ice ;-). Indeed, since about 5 years, Javier had been assisted by the guys from Comando G to give his vineyards and wines a bit more personality. So after the sale, it itched too much and Javier decided to go back into partnership with the guys from Comando G, but this time in a much smaller project and also much more high end than the former Viña Mein. The goal was to make nothing less than the most authentic wines from Ribeiro. That became A Barouta. First vintage became 2020. And that was not easy. Ribeiro is, after all, a very different climate from Sierra de Gredos. The first 3 vintages were therefore a learning process. Often there was no more than 20% of the predetermined harvest that was achieved. Since 2024, the first vintages have been very limited in release. These are very Atlantic white and (especially) red wines with clearly the Comando G stamp.
