Against all odds, the old vine Mencía cuvée from the warmer vintage fared much better than the one from 2012. The 2011 Valtuille Cepas Centenarias has notes of raspberries, camphor, a hint of stems leaving it to feel a little raw but very attractive and slightly earthy in a Gevrey-Chambertin style. The palate is medium-bodied, but reveals very intense flavors and great power, with seriousness and very good balance for such warm vintage. A triumph for the year. Around 4,000 bottles are produced depending on the conditions of the year.
The family winery of the Pérez family in Valtuille de Abajo had a wide and strong collection of wines to show. Beside minuscule single-vineyard bottlings they are also quite good in the available, affordable, young, un-oaked red category. All the old vineyards in Valtuille contain a mixture of grapes, even when Mencía is the dominant one.
