Garnacha

52-60 2023 is the third vintage of this distinctive blend of red and white grapes by Abel Mendoza. The wine comes from small, contiguous plots in Mondiarte, in Labastida. The vines are around 60 years old and are planted on red sandstone soils. The vineyards are farmed organically. The blend is made from Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha, complemented by white grapes such as Garnacha Blanca, Malvasía Riojana and Viura. Only 1,407 bottles were produced.

A micro-vinification from selected grapes, berry by berry, in the best parcels of old vines. Only one to two barrels are produced each year, so only 60 bottles are available for Belgium.

Envínate works in several regions across Spain. The common thread in their wines is elegance and an Atlantic character. This Albahra (“small lake”), however, is their Mediterranean wine, while still remaining light-footed and elegant in style. It is made mainly from Tintorera, sourced from a small 3-hectare vineyard in Almansa planted on clay-limestone soils. The blend is complemented by Moravia Agria, a grape variety of which only about 50 hectares remain planted across the whole of Spain. This grape is known for its high acidity and relatively light colour. The vineyard is located in Manchuela on clay-limestone soils with a sandy top layer. In 2024, a small amount of Garnacha was also added.

Something very special ! This wine comes from a small vineyard in Sajazarra, of which 2/3 is over 100 years old and 1/3 is Tempranillo of 40 years old. The final field blend ensures we get a light very floral wine with lots of character.

Typical clarete: a blend of red grapes (Garnacha tinta) and white grapes (Viura). This is a fine example of a “Blouge” wine, a contraction of blanc and rouge. Historically a very classic style for this region, it is now rarely produced.

This "Friends' wine" is the flagship of this family bodega, located in Corral de Almaguer. It coiuld be sold under the La Mancha denomination, but owner Juan de la Barreda prefers to use the Tierra de Castilla label. The wine is a blend of old Tempranillo grapes (here they call it Cencibel), from three different terroirs: La Desehilla, Monte Alto and El Convento, with some shiraz and cabernet from younger vines.

A new single vineyard cuvée by Ester and Carles. A small parcel of 80 year-old grenache pelut (a hairy-leave variant of Grenache which makes very elegant wines), quite close to the Mas d'en Caçador. The soils are black slate, the altitude is 700 metres above sea level. Biodynamic farming.

It is located in the village of El Tiemblo, in the Province of Avila. In contrast with the other crus where the soil is made of granite, the vines of Las Iruelas grow on slate, facing East, at some 1000 m above sea-level. An outstanding wine.

Mestizaje means “blend” or “assemblage”. It may be the entry-level wine of the estate, but it’s a true standout! Grown on limestone soils at an altitude of 800 metres.

Located in the heart of the Ribera del Duero Finca Valdecreces is part of the Atevino Group. The top wine here is called Nebro - anagram of the group's top Rioja, Orben.

This Páramos de Nicasia is Oriol & Susana's "village wine" in Toro. It comes from an old ungrafted vine in Villaester, North West of the Douro, on sandy soils. Besides the typical Tinta de Toro, one can find there quite a lot of Grenache and Malvasia. If you add to all of this Oriol's very traditional approach to winemaking, you get a really singular Toro.

Javi's "vin de village", this cuvée blends the main grapes of the place: Alicante Bouschet and Monastell. The first comes from a 0,8 hectare vine planted in 1966 at 700 m above sea level; the second, the Monastrell, comes from a small plot on sandy and stony soils at 620 m, planted in 1985. Production: 5.450 bottles, Surprisingly fresh for a bi-varietal from this region.

This co-planted vineyard is planted on the western slope of the Paardeberg. Due to its aspect, it soaks up most of the afternoon sun, hence the name Sonvang (Sun Catch). On this slope, we are able to get the grapes to early maturity, especially on the earlier ripening varietals and, in most cases, with the initial fresh firm acidity. At this point, we are still having multiple picks, but in the future, with pruning dynamics and varied viticulture, we aim to have the entire spread as a singular pick and co-fermentation. We will get there, but for now, we need to get to know this vineyard.

2016 marked the first vintage of El Tamboril Tinto, made from Garnacha vines over 70 years old, planted on a north-facing slope in the Gredos region, south of Madrid. The vines sit at an altitude of 1230 metres. El Tamboril is typically harvested as late as October, yet still struggles to reach even a modest 12.5% alc/vol. The age of the vines, their elevation, and the tiny size of this Grenache parcel—just half a hectare—make it one of Comando G’s rarest and most sought-after cuvées.

El Tamboril is a 0.5-hectare plot that yields just enough wine each year to produce a single 1,000-litre foudre. Tamboril lies at an altitude of 1,230 metres in the Sierra de Gredos. 2016 was the first vintage ever made; in 2017, the grapes were destroyed by a hailstorm in the vineyard, so no wine was produced that year. It is one of Comando G’s most limited cuvées.

Facing the East, this 0,5 ha vineyard is located at an altitude of 1,000 m above sea level, on granite soils. Is is conducted according to the biodynamics principles.

Daniel Landi is one of the most talked-about young winemakers in Spain. He has set Sierra de Gredos back on the wine map of Spain. This Uvas de la Ira blend (Spanish for Grapes of Wrath, like the John Steinbeck novel) is his entry level wine. But what an entry level wine! It is made with old grenaches from different part of the Sierra, mainly on slate (pizarra).

It was virtually abandoned when Fernando and Daniel found it - and saved it. Facing North, at an altitude of 1100 m, on granite and sand soils, it is only half an hectare, but its vines are 70 years old. The Spanish Château Rayas!

Urbezo, a regional artist and a good friend of Santiago Garcia's, was a source inspiration for him. The estate and most of the wines are named after the painter.
