2016 marked the first vintage of El Tamboril Tinto, made from Garnacha vines over 70 years old, planted on a north-facing slope in the Gredos region, south of Madrid. The vines sit at an altitude of 1230 metres.
El Tamboril is typically harvested as late as October, yet still struggles to reach even a modest 12.5% alc/vol.
The age of the vines, their elevation, and the tiny size of this Grenache parcel—just half a hectare—make it one of Comando G’s rarest and most sought-after cuvées.
Vinification
The whole bunches are harvested by hand and fermented with natural yeasts. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, followed by slow maceration for 65 days. The wine is then matured for 12 months in 1000-litre tuns.

Trial analysis
Like the new innovators in Priorat, Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia (Bodega Marañones) are redefining the Grenache grape variety in their joint project Comando G, into something that can rival the elegance and finesse of the best terroirs on the Cote de Nuits or Syrah in Hermitage. Light red in colour, this Grenache is airy yet highly structured, with a unique elegance and long ageing potential.
