Cantos del Diablo is a small 0.3 ha parcel located 900 metres above sea level - which makes it the highest of the whole Mentrida appellation.
Granite soils, North exposition, 70-year-old vines on average.
One of Daniel Landi's "grands crus".

Vinification
At Daniel Landi's, all the grapes are vinified in whole bunches, so as to obtain a cooler fermentation and a lighter extraction.
Daniel only uses indigenous yeasts and old foudres, both for the fermentation and for the ageing.
No correction is made during vinification and only a small dose of sulphur is added at bottling.

Trial analysis
Light colour. Floral on the nose (rose petals), but also spicy, with a touch of minerality (flint).
Rather slender on the palate, but the refined tannins bring a good backbone. No trace of sweetness here (like in many grenache wines), but a nice minerality and very long finale.
This wine deserves to be kept a while in the cellar.

The grapes for the 2020 Cantos del Diablo were picked a little earlier to avoid the rains, and the wine has a paler color than the 2021 I tasted next to it. It feels a little more reductive, and despite having very similar analytics, this is more about the palate with depth and length, while the 2021 is more aromatic and ethereal. This was vinified by Landi and is more in the Comando G style; the 2021 was vinified by Bareño, and the wine is more Fedellos. Different styles but similar (high) quality levels.

Wine estate

Vitícola Mentridana is the successor to Dani Landi Viticultor. Dani, born in Méntrida, followed a similar path as his childhood friend Curro. Both studied oenology and began their careers working in small family-run bodegas. Eventually, they each created their own projects—Comando G for Dani and Fedellos for Curro. Now, their paths have crossed again: Dani decided to bring all his vineyards from the Méntrida appellation under one separate winery, Vitícola Mentridana. Curro now runs the day-to-day operations and makes the wines, always with Dani’s support.
